A FEW LINES FROM MY UPCOMING WORK OF FICTION:
It was almost dark when he reached the small brick house on a residential street just south of town. Low rolling thunder could be heard in the distance as he stepped out of his truck. The wind had picked up, rattling the leaves of the large oak tree that stood near the corner of the house and blowing a fast-food cup across the yard. The rain would be here soon.
He saw a curtain move in the front window, and as he approached the porch, a large, gray-headed woman opened the door and stepped out. Fear consumed her face. "He's dead, ain't he?"
He couldn't look her in the eye. "Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry to tell you that he is."
She wavered on the step – one hand raised to her mouth, the other searching for something to give her support. She issued a low guttural moan as she melted into a mound of flesh and tumbled off the porch before he could reach her.
